Announcing the Theatreworks 2026-2027 Season

Theatreworks 2026-2027 Season Lineup

SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET | September 10 - October 4, 2026
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by Hugh Wheeler, from an adaptation by Christopher Bond

Director: Michael Lluberes

Welcome to the squalid underbelly of Victorian London: corruption runs rampant, beggars line the streets, and the fetid rot of injustice leaves the air as foul as the meat pies. On the bright side, an excellent new barber just opened up shop on Fleet Street, and from the look of things, he’s going to make a killing… Witness Stephen Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece stripped down to the bleeding edge, and see why this chilling tale remains one of the most celebrated musicals of all time. Re-imagined for the Theatreworks stage by Michael Lluberes, this sinister story plunges audiences into a deliciously depraved world of music and madness. but beware: the difference between villainy and virtue isn’t always clean cut.

PRIVATE LIVES | November 19 - December 13, 2026
Written by Noël Coward

Director: Coming Soon!

With the sun setting on a luxurious hotel suite, cocktails on the terrace, and the orchestra playing their song from the ballroom below, Elyot and Amanda have the stage set for a perfect honeymoon – if only they were still married to each other. When the formerly wedded pair discovers they’ve inadvertently booked neighboring honeymoon suites, they reawaken the volatile magnetism that first brought them together (and drove them screaming apart). With their shiny new spouses in tow, the unstoppable force and the immovable object slam together once again. Their collision sparkles with moonlight, champagne, and the witty, repartee that characterizes all of Noël Coward’s best work, reminding audiences ‘tis better to have loved and fought than never to have loved at all…

WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME | January 28 - February 14, 2027
Written by Heidi Schreck

Director: Lynne Hastings

At 15 years old, Heidi funded her college education by making speeches about the Constitution at American Legion Halls; decades later, she’s back with a grown woman’s perspective on just how “we the people” of today begin to relate to the document that built our nation 240 years ago. Part family history, part debate, and part love letter to the Constitution, this bold play examines the strengths and shortcomings of the many amendments that underwrite our government (including the ones you didn’t memorize in high school). It’s not your daddy’s civic lesson, but it just might be the most personal look you’ve ever taken at the living words that built our national identity.

SWEAT | April 15 - May 9, 2027
Written by Lynn Nottage

Director: Taisa Jones

Reading, Pennsylvania stands on blue-collar labor. From the factory that employs generations of steel workers, to the watering hole where those same workers bond after hours, the whole town thrums in time with the factory that sustains them. But Y2K is in the rearview, and times are changing. The tight knit community of factory workers now find themselves divided by strikes, layoffs, automation, and the shattering realization that livelihood trumps loyalty when desperation sets in. Full of warmth, humanity, and heartbreak, Lynne Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize Winning play rebuilds the American moment in miniature, playing out national struggles in a small-town bar. The resulting drama crackles with immediacy and relevance even years after its original production.

DEAR ELIZABETH | June 10 - June 27, 2027
Written by Sarah Ruhl

Director: Max Shulman

Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell left behind masterful collections of award-winning poetry, and yet, their most stirring writing lives on in the 30 years of letters they faithfully exchanged. Featuring dialogue crafted from these letters, and brimming with theatrical magic, Dear Elizabeth brings the story of their relationship to the stage. The quiet, fierce friendship forged in their correspondence teeters precariously on the cusp of romance, and paints a stunningly intimate portrait of two genius minds, linked by what could’ve been. Coursing with humor and marked by the whimsy and wit of America’s best poets, the dramatization of Lowell and Bishop’s letters offers a poignant reminder that love lives in the in-betweens: carried in letters, tucked into songs, hidden in the folds of our laundry, in the sand between our toes, and, occasionally, in the care of a toucan.
