Theatreworks Upcoming Season
GATHER TOGETHER WITH THEATREWORKS’ COMMUNITY
Welcome back! After this time of separation, more than ever we celebrate the power of theatre to gather people together and share stories of our common humanity. After a year, we are delighted to share the excitement and joy of live performances once again with our in-person season of five plays and numerous special events.
Henry IV and V (Sept 20-Oct 13, 2024), by William Shakespeare, Directed and Adapted by Max Shulman: "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown" Shakespeare's multi-part saga chronicling the meteoric rise of King Henry V comes to Theatreworks, combining the text and stories of Henry IV Pt. 1, Henry IV Pt 2 and Henry V into one exceptional play. From the throne room to the tavern, to the battlefield and back, witness this epic interrogation of the steep cost of power to those who wield it, those who lose it and the nation that must choose its leaders wisely. Directed by Max Shulman (An Iliad, Free-For-All: Pericles), this sweeping production promises an explosive opening to the 2024-25 season!
Sense and Sensibility (Nov 29 - Dec 22, 2024), by Jane Austen and adapted by Kate Hamill Directed by Caitlin Lowans: Sisterhood and scandal, romance and rumors, high society and...horses? Jane Austen's Dashwood family bubbles with wit and warmth in this energetic, family-friendly adaptation of the classic novel, following sensible Elinor and sensitive Marianne Dashwood as they navigate the perilous waters of courtship and the human heart. Featuring characters you love (and a few you'll love to hate), this Regency romp by the playwright of 2023’s beloved Little Women and director of Lumberjacks in Love brings all the heart and humor of the original to the stage just in time for the holidays!
The Heart Sellers (Jan 31 - Feb 16), by Lloyd Suh Directed by Jenna Moll Reyes: Thanksgiving dinner looms over a grocery store in 1970s America, when Luna and Jane, immigrants from The Philippines and Korea and both medical student wives, strike up a conversation over matching coats and matching challenges. With a suspiciously frozen turkey in the oven, the two women bond over disco, Disneyland, and the drive to make a home that--until tonight-- has felt so isolated. This Colorado premiere of a poignant, charming new play from Lloyd Suh, and directed by Jenna Moll Reyes (Twelfth Night) explores the longing that connects across barriers and against all odds.
Turn of the Screw (Mar 14 - Apr 6, 2025), by Henry James and Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher Directed by Kristin Skye Hoffman: An isolated manor on the windswept moors, an unsuspecting governess, her two enigmatic young charges, secrets lurking around every corner. Henry James' classic novella has terrified audiences for over a hundred years, and this new stage adaptation heightens the mystery of the original, challenging audiences to separate the ravings of one woman from the horrors she may-or may not?- have witnessed. Join two fantastic actors in the intimacy of the Osborne Studio Theater for a close encounter with one of the best ghost stories ever written.
Silent Sky (May 2 - May 25, 2025), by Lauren Gunderson Directed by Caitlin Lowans: The year is 1900, and the Harvard Observatory is no place for a woman...unless of course she's crunching numbers for a man. Not to be dissuaded, Henrietta Leavitt begins to record her own observations of Cepheid stars, and changes the way we see the night sky the universe, forever. Learn the true story of an overlooked astronomical pioneer, as told by Lauren Gunderson, playwright of 2023’s beloved Half-Life of Marie Curie, and witness the inspiring reminder of what we gain by keeping our sights set on the stars.
Flyin’ West (Jul 11 - Jul 27, 2025), by Pearl Cleage Directed by Marisa Hébert: In 1890s Kansas, the homesteading Dove sisters are proud of their land and of the all-Black town of Nicodemus. But soon they find themselves contending with speculators attempting to buy up their town from outside, and an unsavory brother-in-law who might break up their family from within. Directed by Marisa Hébert (actor - Steel Magnolias, director - Every Brilliant Thing and King Hedley) this play by Pearl Cleage, one of the essential modern American playwrights, highlights unsung pioneers of the American West, and the resilience, resolve, and recipes that let them weather an unforgiving time and place in American history.
