Theatreworks ACT OUT

Theatre happens anywhere intrepid audiences and actors meet.

Creating opportunities for our dynamic and diverse communities of the Pikes Peak region to gather together in joy is at the heart of Theatreworks’ mission and our ACT OUT program (formerly called Free-For-All). Beginning with Comedy of Errors in 2019, the ACT OUT program has grown to include a variety of community partner sites and returns in the summer of 2024 with ACT OUT: 2 Gents. 

Join this joyful, mobile production at libraries, schools, community centers, parks, and senior centers all throughout the Pikes Peak region. Public performances of ACT OUT are always free to audiences, from the oldest to the youngest, and everyone in between. We'll bring the actors, the costumes, the story, and the Shakespearean hijinks, all we're missing is you!

In addition to public sites in Summer 2024, ACT OUT: 2Gents gave closed performances for audiences in District 3 schools, Springs Rescue Mission, and Goodwill, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you're a potential community partner with a specific, closed audience in mind.

FAQs for Potential Performance Sites
  • What is ACT OUT?
    • We take a play, cut it down to 70 minutes, and travel around performing our six-actor adaptation for various community audience. Summer 2024, our performance was Act Out: 2 GENTS, a 70-minute adaptation of Two Gentlemen of Verona. 
  • What are the technical requirements?
    • We require an open space where we can drop a 14x14 foot tarp as our stage, and have audiences arrange themselves on all four sides of it. We bring our own props & costumes. The site can be indoors or outdoors,We don't need electricity, lights, or sound. If performing outdoors, we do need to begin no later than 7p so we finish before sunset.
  • What are the costs?
    • We ask all performance sites NOT to charge audience members. Our performances cost Theatreworks $500 in actor salaries each time we do them. We ask performance sites to identify where on the scale of $0-$600 they can pay based on their budget, and then we rely on grant support to cover the difference!
  • How does marketing work?
    • We rely on partnership with sites to spread the word and market their performance to their community We provide show logos, show description, a flyer/ poster template, and photos from previous seasons if desired, as well as having information on our website and sending out occasional emails! But ACT OUT works best when you already have a community you're excited to gather in a different way, around a piece of theatre!
  • What performance dates are still bookable?
  • When will you announce your 2025 performances?
    • We begin booking performance sites for the upcoming ACT OUT production in the fall of each year and announce dates and times as they become available.
