Theatreworks has long taken an annual trip to London to share the joy of travel with our patrons, and to explore the exciting theatre offerings in a different city. That tour yields artistic inspiration, fellowship, and relationship building, and while the London trip will continue for years to come, we're excited to partner with the Gallery of Contemporary Arts to offer a more accessible arts tour, a little closer to home, in the Windy City: Chicago! Spend a long weekend with the team from Theatreworks and GoCA, and come see the cutting-edge artistic work Chicago has to offer.

With an abundance of theaters, studios, galleries, and museums (including the one in our hotel!), the city offers something for art lovers of all kinds, and we’d love to guide you through the eclectic blend of uniquely American work with the insight of professional artists from Theatreworks and GoCA to frame the conversation.

Your $1950 registration includes*:

  • 4 nights accommodation at the 21c Museum Hotel. Just off the Magnificent Mile, the hotel offers easy access to many attractions, including several major theaters, and includes a curated museum inside the hotel itself.
  • Tickets to 3 shows at some of Chicago's most iconic venues.
    • NOISES OFF at Steppenwolf Theatre

    • BECKY NURSE OF SALEM at Shattered Globe Theatre

    • PRIMARY TRUST at Goodman Theatre

  • Tickets for two visual arts experiences (museum tours, studio visits, etc).
  • A $500 contribution to art in your very own community (along with our boundless gratitude and an “arts patron” line for your resume).

Joy Armstrong GoCA Director

Dr. Joy Armstrong
Director
Galleries of Contemporary Art (GOCA)

Armstrong comes to GOCA from Inside Out Youth Services, where she built access, equity and power with LGBTQIA2+ young people and an extraordinary team for four years. Prior to and alongside this meaningful work, Armstrong has spent nearly 20 years in the museum, gallery and public art realm, most recently as an award-winning curator of modern and contemporary art at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College (FAC). During her decade at the FAC, she became known for immersive and interactive exhibitions. Armstrong holds a B.A. in studio art and communications from the University of Denver, an M.A. in contemporary art history and criticism from Kent State University, and completed her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership, Research, and Policy from UCCS in 2021. Her dissertation “History and Belonging: A Phenomenological Study of Participatory Public Art Murals in Colorado” investigated the ways in which creative engagement with public art can build community, celebrate identity, and address systemic social inequities to advance a more just tomorrow. In addition to her academic pursuits, she is both personally and professionally a committed proponent of authentic, collaborative, community engagement in the arts as a powerful tool to improve individual and societal health.
